When everybody watched the fateful cut scene in Resident evil 5 on what exactly happened Jill on that stormy day at the Spencer mansion, many wondered why the hell Capcom didn't allow you to play through the events leading up to Jill going head first through a window. The answer? Capcom wanted to sucker more money out of you to do so at a later date.
I had 500 odd Microsoft points sat in my Xbox Live account for months. So I figured I'd spend some of that and cop this new Lost in nightmares scenario. It has nostalgia in spades and you get to kick it with my bitch Jill. But is it worth the money, and does it help add to the overall RE5 experience?
Those hoping for Lost in nightmares to fill in any gaps will be disappointed. You'd think the lead up to the encounter with Wesker and our homie Spencer lying dead in a wheelchair would have been an interesting one. Full of revelations, epic cut scenes and iconic moments. But it's nothing more than a glorified walk through the well known mansion, with a few cranks to turn and some emblems to pick up along the way.
I was sad to find out that Chris and Jill weren't the main duo in Resident evil 5. But took some solace that they were reunited for Lost in nightmares. But in actual fact, Chris and Jill feel no different than Chris and Sheva. The exchanges between Chris and Jill are stone cold. There's no sense of camaraderie between them which leads you to believe that either of them would die to save one another. Capcom need to go play Uncharted 2 and get schooled on how you drop genuine conversations between male and female lead characters with a history. Because clearly, nobody at Capcom has a clue. Nobody is expecting Jill to straddle Chris and make jokes about keeping shit strictly professional. But some form of warmth between the two of them would not go amiss. After all; they've been good friends and mission partners for almost 10 years, and they do not trust anybody in the same way they trust one another. Give us something that alludes to that other than files in Wesker's reports please Capcom!

You can hardly blame Capcom for releasing extra content for a price. After all: money needs to be made here. But Capcom played too heavily on the fact that they knew fans would want to visit the Spencer mansion in what had to be one of the most memorable cut scenes in Resident evil 5. I could be grateful that Capcom threw us a bone, but why should I be? The DLC is boring, and there's no excuse Capcom can give for not making this a free unlockable. Assignment Ada in Resident evil 4 was much more substantial than Lost in nightmares, and d'ya know what? It was part of the game which you had already paid money for. Capcom wouldn't know about free unlockables nowadays if it injected them in the neck.
Lost in nightmares feels far too redundant and un-essential. The sense of tension and atmosphere which was sorely lacking from the main game is here. Narrow corridors, badly lit rooms, sounds and groans from something which you can't see, seeing your enemy looming in the distance, and disorientating mazes and stairwells to throw you off balance when they finally find you. Lost in nightmares offers a nice glimpse into what the main game should have featured a little more of. But it never amounts to anything more. You get the same old recycled anchor dragging mutant in a hoody popping up constantly and the fight with Wesker is that same shit you experience in Chapter 5-3 of the main game. There isn't a great deal here that the GameCube remake of Resident evil doesn't serve up.
The one saving grace to copping this throwback scenario is that it comes with the new Mercenaries reunion mode, which is great. It's the same stages and premise, but with time bonuses in different places and more enemies to make your life hell. It is a much greater challenge then the original Mercenaries, and you get some great new characters with cool weapon sets and melee attacks to mess around with. You can tell Capcom had fun with this mode. But once again, Capcom catch you by the balls (titties if you're a female gamer). Because additional characters cannot be unlocked by achieving A ranks on each stage. Oh no... You have to buy the additional costume packs and the Desperate escape scenario to unlock them all. Yep! More money. And you can't even use the characters from the original Mercenaries mode in the new one. Sloppy. Slap dash. How Capcom roll. Dead wrong.

The Chris and Jill in the mansion dealio is boring and it's incredibly short. I played through it once, I won't be playing through it again. There's the option to play the game in co-op, but I don't see the point. There's barely anything to do when you're playing on your own let alone with somebody else. And the AI is just fine. But the option is there...I guess. The conversations you can exchange with who you're playing with may be more interesting than the game play itself.
Lost in nightmares is worth picking up if you want to run amok with Barry and Excella in the new Mercenaries mode. This is really the only thing which enticed me into buying it. But if you're expecting some cool play experience to make you fall in love with Resident evil 5 again, you won't find it here. Ending up with this mode as a result of buying the full Resident evil 5: Gold edition is one thing. But as a stand alone extra, I don't think it's worth it. The new Mercenaries mode is a great addition. But the fact you have to shell more money out for the extra characters harms it significantly.

The good
+ Comes with The Mercenaries reunion
+ Re-unites Chris and Jill, if only for a short time
+ Feels much more Resi like than the main adventure of Resident evil 5
The bad
- The Lost in nightmares scenario itself is boring
- No replay value what-so-ever
- Another case of Capcom charging extra for DLC which should have been free

Bleh! Well that just saved me $5.
ReplyDeleteAnd nice little shout out to Uncharted 2. Most realistic and natural dialog between video game characters I've ever seen.
Save your 5 dollars. Picking and wrapping up Harley's doo-doo with your bill would be a better use of it than buying this crap.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I be tearing through The Mercenaries reunion like there's no tomorrow. But the way Capcom went on stank over unlocking the extra characters just f**ks it all up for those who own the original release of RE5 and don't plan on buying the Gold edition.
