Is 'Within every moment of crisis lies a fleck of hope and happiness' a saying? Or am I a profound individual who made that shit up? Either way, this feels like the case with Mass effect 3.
It was only coming off of a fresh Mass effect 2 play-through and having 3 to compare it to that I realised how dark of a game it was. The locations, the sound, even the colour of the menu screens being rusty orange evoked a feeling of tenebrosity. Every other mission in Mass effect 3 has you witness somebody die. And if you aren't witnessing somebody dying, then you'll be having a conversation about people dying. With dialogue options branching off into subjects about...more people dying. Paragon dialogue options have you give sympathy towards the dead. Renegade options have you kill somebody. Mass effect 3 deals with a whole lotta death. But for all of the talk of that D word, Mass effect 3 isn't overcast with bleakness. There are moments when the shit hits the fan so badly that you can't see the light, from the doo-doo. And I'm sure I've not witnesses anything yet. But there are many moments of humour and light heartedness. Bioware don't often get a great deal of props for their humour, but Mass effect 3 is full of it. You can tell that Bioware had as much fun with the humour of this game as they did creating this bleak blockbuster which deals with the future of humanity hanging in an unstable balance. Eavesdropping on conversations on the Citadel will yield humours moments. Checking out snippets of Blasto 6: Partners in crime on the Citadel will badassfully leave you in stitches. Garrus is never more than a sentence away from a quick or off handed joke. And EDI rivals Joker with the witty banter and humourous exchanges. Even in the midst of fighting for all or nothing on Tuchanka and being attacked by a Thresher maw, three brutes and a Reaper, jokes are made and Shepard shows good humour.
Humanity is at stake. Earth is a fucking mess. And people have died. But if you don't laugh, you'll spend the whole time crying. And I love that Bioware counter what could have been a heavy and draining adventure with moments of humour and light heartedness. And the balance so far has been perfect.
There is a Reaper invasion at hand. But Joker still finds the time to ask Liara if her hair tentacles move, Mordin gives another performance of Scientist Salarian and EDI asks Shepard about sex. Man, I love this game. And of course, Kaidan.
The verdict so far? This shit is like Friends in space...WITH GUNS AND SHIT!
