Many have been up in arms about Final Fantasy's soundtracks from X onwards, where Mr. Final Fantasy himself: Nobuo Uematsu was not the sole composer of the soundtracks any more. Contrary to popular belief, Nobuo is not the only man on earth with the ability to deliver a solid Final Fantasy soundtrack. He is a staple because his music has helped define Final Fantasy. But I like that Square are giving other talents a chance to give their interpretations on how an FF game should sound. And I can't fault what I've heard from Masashi Hamauzu's soundtrack so far.
This piece I'm about to share with you is Lightning's theme. My friend kept playing it to me down the phone, and it was love from then.

The piece was a winner from the start. But when the battle theme comes in, it just makes it even better. The way the battle theme gets romanticized is just awesome. As many character theme's do, this piece gives a lot of insight into Lightning's character - and coincides with bits 'n pieces of what we've seen of her in trailers. The vulnerability, heroism, the tragedy, the edge: it's all encapsulated in this piece of music.
I can't wait to hear the soundtrack in full. Final Fantasy XIII's soundtrack is one of the first since VIII's, where I've actually wanted to hear in its entirety.

That was lovely, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I hold a lot of love for Nobuo Uemastu (I own copies of the soundtracks for FFVIII - X) I don't hold against the other composer's for trying. FFX-2 soundtrack wasn't too bad (ok some of the moe pop-y and techno stuff was too much to take but the slower, stripped down tracks was nice). The only FF soundtrack I didn't like was FFXII - nothing stuck out to me, it just bored me.
Apparently Masashi Hamauzu helped compose the soundtrack for FFX so I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the game when it comes out.
No apparently about it. Masashi did indeed help compose the Final Fantasy X soundtrack! :D
ReplyDeleteWhen you hear some of the pieces from XIII, you'll go "Aaaaaahhh...this sounds a little like [such and such] from X!" and be able to distinguish pretty easily which pieces he may have had a hand in. XIII's "Boss battle 2" theme sounds a heck of a lot like X's "Boss battle" theme (which I LOVED!)
The 2 FF soundtracks that I found the most forgettable were IX and also XII. Although, Final Fantasy XII's 'Boss battle' and 'Esper battle' themes were pretty amazing.
