Lightning out. Serah in. Paradigm shift!!

Noel & Serah | Final Fantasy XIII-2

Noel & Serah | Final Fantasy XIII-2

One look at the screenshot is all it takes to see that Final Fantasy XIII's battle system will be making a return in its sequel, which I'm happy about. Because if it ain't broke, don't paradigm shift it. And the battle system was one of the best aspects of XIII when all else was failing. But I'm hearing things about Lightning being written out of Final Fantasy II-2's story, which I'm not chuffed about.

Lightning didn't so much evolve as a character as she did get made irrelevant. She went from a center stage, cold, awesome, rude bitch. To an center stage, awesome rude bitch with a heart. And then she just got sidelined to the point that you forgot about how awesome she was in the beginning. She got relegated! And when she started to like Snow, I lost all respect for her completely. Because frankly, Snow is not likable. He fulfills the good-looking-to-the-point-of-being-pretty-FF character role. But that man is just annoying. So I was hoping that XIII-2 would be a chance for a bit of redemption in Lightning's favour. Square Enix cannot drop a trailer of Lightning working some leg and going all Soul Calibur on our arses, and then write her out of the game. They just can't.

Serah was pretty much the unplayable main character in Final Fantasy XIII, so I guess XIII-2 could be Square Enix relinquishing the role to her completely. It strikes me as odd, seeing as she had no fighting ability what-so-ever in XIII and wasn't able to do anything but whine, cry, get turned into a crystal, and give herself London rude girl hair styles. But if Hope and Tidus can manage to hold up in battles, then I that insta-makes Serah more than capable. She's more man than those two combined. Hope and Tidus just about make up a testicle between them.

If Serah is going to be the main character, then Square are going to have to do a couple of things with her. I hope that...
  • She becomes every bit as stank as Lightning was.
  • Her marriage to Snow is over.
  • Her marriage to Snow is over because she cheated on him with Hope.
  • Serah runs both Snow and Hope through the dirt by emarking on a relationship with new guy Noel.
  • Serah becomes a bit of a whore.
  • Serah becomes the main character due to some ridiculously epic sacrifice which Lightning has made (i.e She died for the universe).
I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII-2. XIII was an iffy game to say the least, but there were moments when I genuinely enjoyed playing it and even loved it. A large part of my interest in XIII-2 is that I liked the world and some of the characters in XIII enough to the point where I would like to see them fleshed out and revisited again -  because frankly, Square Enix didn't push any of them far enough in XIII.

I think I may be one of the few people who actually liked X-2. So I'm not mad at Square Enix for XIII-2. Even if the Paradigm shifting becomes just a ruse to switch Serah into a new slutty outfit, and the theme song to the game is Lightning popping her pussy to a J-Pop track from Ayumi Hamasaki - I won't be mad.

Also, Noel reminds me of that main dude from Birth by sleep. A Tetsuya Nomura design? More than likely. No zips. But I'm sure he'll work an outfit in the game at some point which features loads.

I expect a new FMV sequence to be shown at E3 where Serah is somersaulting all over the place and making like Yoda with a Gunblade. Given Square Enix's inability to tell really good stories these days, there'll probably be no explanation as to how Serah turned into a ninja assassin. Just as long as everything looks real nice.

  1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The first screenshot is not showing but the 2nd makes me very interesed. The guy looks like the child of Fang and Terra from Birth By Sleep, and if Serah is joining the frey it'll be quite a feat to see (and hey if Kairi from Kingdom Hearts can weild a keyblade than any chick can battle!)

And my thoughts echo yours; I didn't hate X-2 and I did enjoy parts of XIII (eell I certainly liked it more than XII) so I am looking forward to XIII-2, even though I want Versus XIII to drop first.

  2. Argh... Final Fantasy Versus XIII. I'm beginning to wonder if that game truly exists any more and if it will see the light of day *sighs*

Black refiners. We’ve gotta talk about that Milchick and Drummond moment in the Severance episode, “The After Hours”.

So, I’m watching season 2 of Severance. And as I post this, the ninth episode of the season “The After Hours” has just aired. And I really wanna talk about it. Well, I wanna talk about one moment in particular — Milchick and Drummond’s lil’ chat. Probably one of my favourite moments of the episode, which felt like the culmination of lots of Milchick moments diverging — adding a new wrinkle to a story and a world which already has more wrinkles than a newborn Shar Pei. Severance has made a commentary on a lot of things. Corporate shenanigans. Abuse of power dynamics. Sexisism. Homophobia. Religion. Consent. Control. And now I guess we can add race to the mix. Full disclaimer. To fully pre-empt and prevent being branded a liar and being misleading — the images in this post with subtitles are not official subtitles from Severance. They are subtitles I slapped on the images for extra effect and humour’s sake, in the vein of ‘What would these characters want to actually say’. I am including...

Nintendo and the Switch 2 pricing shenanigans

I am one of the few people in existence who does not own a Nintendo Switch. Y’all. Even my mum owns a Nintendo Switch. It’s crazy, because I have been with Nintendo through thick and thin and owned near-enough all of their systems. Nintendo has been a constant presence in my life. But the Wii and the Wii U left a sour taste in my mouth which made me apprehensive about buying a Switch. And because I had Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild on Wii U, I had no real incentive to buy a Switch early on. And then there was the Joy-Con drift issue which was a thing from the very beginning. But by the time the Switch had blossomed into this great system with a fantastic library of games, I figured ‘I’ll just get the rumoured Switch Pro when it drops’. Of course I knew this probably wouldn’t be the name, but I was adamant that a revised version of the Switch would release at some point and hopefully Nintendo woulda fixed them damn Joy-Cons. System redesigns mid-way through a console life cycle ha...

Game Review: Kingdom Hearts III | A mess

I typed this post after the first couple hours of playing Kingdom Hearts III, with the intent of posting it the next morning. But then I kept playing it more and more, and this post just became a near diary of my thoughts of Kingdom Hearts III. So, what was supposed to be my First impressions, became more like my first, second, third, forth, fifteenth impressions. Basically a su-   Fuck it. It’s a damn review. As if anybody gives a damn. This post isn’t that spoilerific. But there are definitely spoilers. So if you’ve not played through Kingdom Hearts III yet, then go stream “Don’t Think Twice” by Hikaru Utada on Spotify.
